Specifically, the bill would make ineligible for food stamps any family where one adult member participates in a strike other than a lockout. (I seriously wonder how much a burden strikes are on the food stamp program on a yearly basis). This provision has nothing to do with saving money, and it sure isn’t about adding jobs — it’s a punitive pre-emptive strike (HAH!) against workers’ constitutionally guaranteed rights.
Additionally, the bill amends the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to eliminate the temporary modification of the Caseload Reduction Credit (no, I don’t know what that is either) and reduce state family assistance grants. It also includes this language: (emphasis mine)
Congress further finds that it should also be the goal of the food stamp program to increase employment [?QUE?], to encourage healthy marriage [ditto], and to promote prosperous self-sufficiency which shall mean the abilities of households to maintain an income above the poverty level without government services and benefits.
By denying them food and state assistance. That’s one magic piece of legislation!
